Sometimes a new home starts with old bones.
When Kent and Caroline Giguere bought their Greenville home in 2015, it was just the two of them. But times have really changed and so have their needs.
The couple now has three young sons, and while the bones of their Chanticleer home were good and the neighborhood is where they wanted to stay, the floor plan no longer served their busy, growing family.
Coln Construction came to the rescue, and now the family is set for decades of a very full life in a space that combines new amenities in a familiar location.
“Some of the rooms were kept intact but we really opened most of the interior, totally renovated the bathrooms and the kitchen and opened up some walls in the living room to create a really cool wet bar area,” Coln Construction owner Andrew Coln says. “We worked with Frances Still at Kinloch Interiors, and she really made some awesome selections throughout.”
The family moved out for a year, which was no small feat. It did make the total renovation easier than doing a piecemeal approach.

“We were ready to renovate for our three boys,” Caroline Giguere says.
The family had some special requests that Coln was able to accommodate.
“Our middle son has a rare genetic disorder and he's blind,” Giguere, who co-founded KIND (Kids Including & Nurturing Disabilities) of the Upstate, says.
A disruption in his sleep cycle meant that the family’s original plan to have the two older children share a room would not work.
Their son also benefitted from some custom additions like double handrails on the stairs and a laundry chute in his room that feeds directly to the laundry room.
“There's a lot of thought to just making the house really beautiful but also really durable for them,” Coln says. “The landscaping was all redone as well. There were some issues with water that we corrected, but also in the backyard area we did all grassy turf because the kids want to play outside. We made it super durable for them to have something that was long lasting and was going to remain beautiful even with the kids.”
And it was worth the effort, Caroline says.
“It's such a blessing and we're so thankful that we are able to bring our family home here every day and live our life in a spot where these kids will make so many memories,” she says. “This house is going to be such a safe haven for them forever and for us too because we're not leaving.”
