When a family has both a lake home and a mountain home in their sights, it takes careful planning and attention to detail to make that happen.

Chris Hamblen, Chief of Operations for Fairview Custom Homes, found just that situation in a custom build at The Reserve at Lake Keowee, where the company balanced long-range mountain views with building close to the water. The result is a stunning home that Fairview built in partnership with MHK Architecture.

The house is built for luxury living indoors and out. One of the most unique features is a full outdoor kitchen with a grill, vent hood and outdoor heaters all under a roof.

“It's really spaced in a way that you can leave all the doors to the house open, and you've got your flow of light and music and family,” Hamblen says.

Using the grade of the lot to full advantage, an expansive terraced level at the back of the home has hard-finish flooring and 12-foot ceilings, providing a true outdoor living space that takes advantage of lake views. And speaking of the lake, a covered boat dock offers a space to relax right on the water.

But the custom nature of this home doesn’t stop there. Hamblen says hundreds of artisans and construction professionals worked to create a space that is one of a kind.

Indoors, accent walls bring life to many of the rooms, with careful color coordination throughout that reflects serene, natural warmth. The challenge was keeping the large, vaulted central living space from looking like a monolithic void, Hamblen says.

“There was a lot of consideration given to the size of the beams and the spacing, just trying to tie it together to make it feel cozy and not too open,” he says.

Custom features, such as a zero-entry shower, herringbone floor tile, built-in cabinetry in the living area, as well as splashes of rustic elements and multiple spots for dining and entertaining, create a home that can serve the homeowners and their guests for many years to come. It reflects the creativity of the builders and the family that will call it home.

“We really like the lightness and brightness of the colors, the use of the brick,” he says. “It's fun to do something a little bit out of the norm.”
