Thirty-eight bills related to elections passed both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly in the first half of 2024. Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) vetoed 13 of these, the most vetoes of election-related legislation by any governor during the period. Despite the vetoes, the 25 new laws related to elections adopted this year are the most of any state with a divided government.

Artist, philanthropist P. Buckley Moss dies; legacy lives on through art, education
The art world is in mourning after learning today that P. Buckley Moss died on Saturday after a short illness. She was 91. Born on May 20, 1933, Patricia Moss discovered her passion for art at a young age. Moss was dyslexic. She discovered her artistic potential and enrolled in a high school for the fine arts, and later, graduated from New York’s Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.
JMU Athletics goes cashless for 2024-25 season and beyond
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - James Madison University Athletics is transitioning to cashless operations for all home competitions starting this fall. Stadium ticketing operations, concessions and stadium bookstore merchandise sales all fall under this new move to cashless payment methods, according to a press release. Patrons will need to have a debit or credit card available to use.
Local grocer named finalist for national industry award

Jon Henry General Store offers fresh produce and slabs of bacon, novelty socks and staple goods out of a historic New Market building that's more than 200 years old. The founder, Jon Henry, was recently named one of three finalists for the Rural Grocer of the Year Award. It's given out by the Rural Grocery Initiative, a national organization that supports locally-owned grocery stores outside of urban areas.

Halifax, Madison Heights, Amherst win DYB state championships in Appomattox
Halifax, Madison Heights and Amherst left town last week as winners of the 2024 Virginia State DYB Tournament held July 5-10 at at the Appomattox County Community Park. Halifax won the Ozone Division 1 (ages 11-12) trophy with an 11-0 victory over Appomattox. Madison Heights captured the AAA Minors Division I (ages 9-10) trophy with an 11-5 win over Goochland. Amherst won Ozone Division II (ages 11-12) with an 11-1 win over Clarksville.
