LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A popular barbecue joint in the capital city has closed up shop. Phat Jack’s BBQ announced the closure Wednesday in a Facebook post. “After 15 years of service to the Lincoln area, we have made the decision to close our doors,” the Burt family said in the post. “We would like to thank everyone for the support.”

Announcing a New Literary Festival Event to Take Place this Fall
Book lovers, get your calendars to save the date. A new literary festival is taking place in Lincoln. The 2024 Nebraska Celebration of Books (NCOB) will take place on Oct. 12, 2024, in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus Union at 1400 R Street. Two presentations, a writing workshop, and a slam poetry competition will take place on second floor leading up to the presentation of the Nebraska Book Awards at 3:30 p.m. NCOB will also host local bookstores and other vendors throughout the day beginning at 10:00 a.m.

GI Man Sentenced for Unlawful Firearm Possession
United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Tesluach Gatkuoth, 27, of Grand Island, NE, was sentenced July 17, 2024, in federal court in Omaha, Nebraska for being a felon in possession of a firearm. United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher sentenced Gatkuoth to 120 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Gatkuoth’s release from prison, he will begin a 3-year term of supervised release.

What drew you to a career in anesthesiology? I never considered anesthesiology as a specialty until my general surgery rotation as a third-year medical student in Minnesota. I initially loved the mix of pharmacology and physiology happening on the other side of the drape. I also liked the spectrum of patients from healthy to critically ill. Most importantly, I felt like I fit in personality-wise with all the anesthesiologists I met in medical school.
Omaha Foster Child Dies After Being Left In Hot Car
A 5-year-old Nebraska boy in foster care died after being left for several hours inside a hot SUV, and his foster mother is now facing charges. Omaha officers were called at 5:11 p.m. Wednesday to a beauty salon parking lot. Lt. Neal Nonacci told the Omaha World-Herald that someone saw the boy and contacted police. The child was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police believe the child had been left in the SUV “for an extended period of time.” The boy’s foster mother was arrested and charged with child abuse by neglect resulting in death. The temperature peaked at 86 degrees about an hour before the child was found.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A former Grand Island day care director convicted of stealing thousands of dollars from the center was sentenced to five years probation on July 10. Andrew Moss, who ran St. Paul's Cornerstone Early Learning Center, pleaded guilty in April to theft by unlawful taking – more than $5,000.
