All the Marine City councilmembers repeatedly say they “love our small businesses.” But what value is professing love if it isn’t followed up with a little hugging and kissing. In fact, it’s usually followed by the opposite: slapping on some new burden. In the most recent example, the City Council is forcing the Brookside Bar & Grill to get a new, revised liquor license that restricts the use of their backyard property to the “hardscape patio” even though no such restriction exists for their current license.

Marine City hires new DPW superintendent
The Marine City Commission voted unanimously on July 11 to hire Aaron Atkinson as superintendent of the city’s Department of Public Works. Retired DPW Superintendent Jeffrey Schmidt, who had a part-time, as-needed employment agreement approved at the commission’s June 20 meeting, came forward during the public comment portion of the meeting to speak.

The owner of American Custom Marine in Kimball, Mich., Michael Knoblock doesn’t simply enjoy speed on the water. Knoblock makes his living selling powerboats, from new Nor-Tech center consoles to pre-owned V-bottoms and catamarans, that deliver it. His most recent personal pleasure-boat, for example, was a well-known Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats 51 GTX called Mamba. Then-powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 1075SCi engines, the Dean Loucks-painted 51-footer topped 120 mph.
Harbormaster Mike Davenport named Port Huron to Mackinac Race Committee Person of the year
Port Huron Harbormaster Mike Davenport was named the Port Huron to Mackinac Race Person of the Year for his dedication to the race. Davenport said he's been volunteering with the Bayview Yacht Club's race committee for the last 15 years. He said it's great to be recognized for what he's done with the committee. He said the award not only recognizes himself, but also all the other volunteers who work to make the race happen every year.

In the treasurer race, the Republican candidates are Christine Brickel and Alayne Waterstraat, a current township trustee. Chesterfield Township police officer hit by fleeing vehicle
A Chesterfield Township police officer was injured Monday morning after being hit by a vehicle occupied by a pair of fleeing suspects. Around 11 a.m., three males entered the Walmart store on Marketplace Boulevard and stole over $1,000 worth of merchandise, according to police. Walmart loss prevention recognized at least one of the individuals, who has stolen from other area Walmart stores previously, and contacted police while the suspects were leaving the store.

Chesterfield Township gets positive audit report
Chesterfield Township has received a positive audit report for the 2023 fiscal year. Pam Hill, a partner at Plante Moran, presented the results of the township’s most recent audit at a July 9 Board of Trustees meeting. She said the firm spent over 500 hours auditing the township’s books and records, and performed a compliance audit related to federal spending.
