Malheur Lumber Company to halt operations after 41 years
JOHN DAY – Malheur Lumber Company, the last remaining commercial sawmill in John Day, has announced it will close down its operations. In their closing letter, the company cited the “lack of a willful/drug free workforce, lack of housing to allow to recruit from outside the area, market conditions of lumber over the last couple of years, cost of manufacturing (due to inflation) and low/inconsistent production (due to lack of employees) and continuing layering of governmental regulations upon small business in Oregon” as being primary factors for the closure.

Police respond to late-night brawl outside WinCo store in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. -- A spokesperson with Eugene Police said at least eight people were involved in a brawl that broke out in front of a Winco store in Eugene. Police responded to calls about the around 11:53 p.m. on July 24 in front of the WinCo located off Barger Drive.

Police arrest man accused of abandoning children in woods after six-month hunt
JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. -- A man accused of neglect, domestic violence assault, robbery, theft, harassment and endangerment was arrested this week after a six-month-long manhunt. According to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the man -- 24-year-old Justin Ryan Trompeter -- was arrested on July 12 after being spotted in Medford. Police then chased him across Jackson and Josephine counties.
Updates on Diamond, Shelly, and Knot Fires Thursday morning 7-25-2024
OREGON – The Diamond Complex Fire continues to burn in Douglas County. The complex is now made up of 20 fires totaling more than 3,000 acres. The largest of the lightning-caused fires within it are the Pine Bench and Trail fires. The complex as a whole is about 3% contained. Any additional spot fires breaking out are being quickly knocked down and contained.
Northern California forecast: Gusty winds Friday bring elevated wildfire risk
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Wildfire risk is higher than average Friday for Northern California as gusty winds could help fuel fires. A red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through 11 p.m. because of southern winds. That could be problematic for firefighters as they work to extinguish the Park Fire, California's largest wildfire of the year so far.
