Most restaurants bounce back after poor inspection reviews. The problems are minor blips on the radar and the staff at the establishments do what they can to make the necessary improvements. However, while the majority of restaurants do what they can to correct previous faults, that cannot be said for all Tucson restaurants. One pizza restaurant in particular has continued to turn its back on inspection reports. At times it can take restaurants a few weeks to make certain violation corrections, especially when appliance-related, but for the third time in six weeks, this local cattery has failed its inspection, with a Probation rating in the mix as well.

The first visit from the health department to Scordato’s Pizzeria happened on August 12. Over the course of the inspection, the restaurant, located at 4911 North Stone Avenue, was cited for 20 violations. A follow-up “Enforcement Inspection” was scheduled for August 22, giving the restaurant a standard ten days to make the necessary improvements. While the restaurant did correct half of the violations, 10 violations were still present during the August 22 inspection, and as such the restaurant was given a Fail grade.

A Fail grade is not the end of the line for a restaurant following a health inspection. They are given ample opportunities to correct the problems. Typically, restaurants correct the issues enough to be given a Pass grade by the next visit. Scordato’s Pizzeria did not.

A third inspection took place on September 3, and the issues continued to persist, so the restaurant was placed on probation. Another follow-up visit was performed on September 13, and again the restaurant failed to make all of the required corrections. By this point, the violation numbers had dropped to five, but the essential problems were not corrected, and Scordato’s was, once again, given a Fail grade.

The most recent visit by the health department took place on September 23. Additional improvements were made, though there were still two priority violations that resulted in the restaurant’s third Fail grade (the health department does not provide specific violation information following the initial inspection, other than the updated inspection rating and the number of violations).

There is no limit in the number of Fail ratings a restaurant can receive, and Scordato’s Pizzeria will continue to receive visits from the health department every 10 days until it makes all of the required improvements. Additional information for the most recent inspection that took place on October 3 will be forthcoming, as it takes the health department a few weeks to process and post reports.
