New Subway Restaurant Opening Soon. Replacing...Old Subway Restaurant

In the world of sandwich shops, few have the name recognition of Subway. At the turn of the century, Subway had the sandwich segment of the restaurant industry in a vice grip. The Five Dollar Footlong marketing ploy helped bring hungry customers into shops around the country, as it was difficult to beat that kind of a deal. However, as controversy and rising prices hit the brand, Subway began to lose some of its luster. The brand has switched its marketing tactics, relying now on Charles Barkley voiceovers and celebrity cameos to hawk the subs. While the brand doesn’t have the same kind of presence as it once did, it’s still looking for new markets to expand into. This includes Tucson, as a new Subway is heading our way.

Just a few weeks ago, Subway officially signed a lease to rent out a smaller, 900-square-foot retail space at the Sunrise Village Shopping Center. This is at the intersection of North Swan and East Sunrise Drive. This will be next to the Safeway at the intersection corner.

However, the interesting aspect of this lease signing is there is currently a Subway already inside of the shopping center. While not a great deal of information was provided regarding the lease, other than the players involved with signing the fresh document, this is a new lease and not a lease extension. An official address was not given for the property, other than it will be between 4700-4800 East Sunrise Drive. Chances are, the restaurant will move to a larger space in the shopping center to improve the customer experience, all without abandoning the desirable space. Sandwiched between Anytime Fitness and Safeway, it’s an excellent spot to sell quickly-produced food to those hungry after a workout or anyone hungry after shopping (and who doesn’t want to blow through their box of Cheez-Its while driving home).

The current Subway has received a slew of negative reviews over the past several months (the last several Google reviews regarding the Subway were all 1-star). So, it is possible the move will cause a reset of the reviews. However, Subway likely isn’t moving to a neighboring storefront just to reset its recent reviews, and instead is looking for a larger storefront to take advantage of.

Regardless, if you frequent the Subway off of North Swan and East Sunrise, you might need to pop into a different storefront in the coming months.
