The local chapter of the Sierra Club is partnering with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences to host a free, family-friendly Earth Day celebration including nature, music, and food at the Contentnea Creek site in Grifton, A Time for Science.

“We’re trying to help people experience and understand a natural environment the same way the Sierra Club members do,” said Jeff Monico, president of the Cypress Group. “So we all love the environment and we’re trying to get as many other people as possible aware of and exposed to it.

“We’re working with NC Museum of Natural Science, A Time for Science, and that’s been a wonderful relationship,” Monico said, “working with Emily Jarvis and those folks. That group and the Cypress Group are on the same page. We’re looking to accomplish the same things.”

Exhibitors from The Aurora Fossil Museum, Terra Bella Compost, Tar River Beekeepers, among others will be present for the celebration.

“ECU’s Art Education Department has partnered with a storyteller to offer live performances throughout the day inside our Visitor’s Center,” Sam Eubanks, Education Coordinator for A Time for Science, said. “Guided trail hikes will be scheduled, or you can make your way along the trails independently to our kayak pond, stop for a paddle, and explore beyond.”

Visitors can expect to meet live animals, make and take projects like seed bombs and other sustainable crafts, and learn about ways to make sustainable choices in their communities. Vendors and food trucks will offer Thai food, barbecue, and ice cream for people to enjoy while listening to live music and enjoying the pond views.

The Celtic band led by Mamie Dixon, Twisted Knot, will provide music outdoors beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by Bill Redding and Friends at 12:30 p.m. and The NuClear Twins at 2 p.m.

Monico explained that a goal of the Cypress Group is to help local political leaders understand the positive side of moving to renewable energy, moving away from fossils.

“Sometimes the Sierra Club gets a bad rap,” he said, “but we really believe renewables are great and we think the local government — Pitt County, Greenville, GUC — are excellent audiences for this message of more renewables.”

Another one of Cypress’ goals, he explained, is to help everyone experience and understand the natural world.

“People are so busy with their lives, they don’t get out in it enough,” Monico said.

The Earth Day celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 20 at 949 Contentnea Lane, Grifton.Visit www.atimeforscience.org/earth-day for more details.
