Friday night’s opening season football game at Merk Field in Rogers, resembled two titans trading blows for four quarters, but in the end, it would be the visiting Groesbeck Goats coming out on top with the win, 56-42.
The game was close right down to the wire. With the score in favor of the Goats early in the fourth quarter, Rogers managed to score a touchdown to tie the game at 35 apiece.
The Eagles shot themselves in the claw when they were hit with a targeting penalty, putting the ball at their own 31.
Groesbeck wasted no time getting the ball into the end zone as the offense drove the ball down to the two-yard line. From there, quarterback Trent Platt punched the ball in to put the Goats back on top, 42-35.
A defensive fumble recovery by the Goat's Ombrey Jones gave the offense the ball at the Eagles 25. Groesbeck slipped inside the five-yard line, and once again Platt took the ball in from the two, to make it a two-touchdown lead, but the Eagles somehow got back into firing distance after scoring on a 78-yard kickoff return.
With the score 49-42, Goats, Groesbeck marched down to the Eagle's five-yard line on consecutive carries by QB Platt, until he found a hole in the Rogers defense to hit paydirt and put the decisive blow on the back and fourth contest.
Platt finished the night with 22 carries for 177 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns in the win, while Jordan Smith wowed the Groesbeck faithful with 199 yards on just 11 touches and put the ball into the end zone three times.
Ja’marya Hall helped the Goats cause with eight carries for 59 yards, and Ombry Jones finished the game with one carry for 14 yards and caught one pass for 63 yards.
In the passing department, Platt completed seven out of 10 passes for 99 yards. Smith caught three of those passes for 15 yards; Cannon Campbell caught two for 16 yards, and Nick Sanchez caught one for a five-yard gain.
The highlight of the night for the Goats was when Smith got his first carries of the game in the second quarter. The first two times he touched the ball resulted in touchdown runs of 64 and 48 yards, putting him over the hundred-yard mark before halftime.
Defensive highlights for Groesbeck had Adryen Ramirez saving a touchdown when he caught up with Rogers receiver Jacob McCormick to make the tackle; Nico Delira broke up a pass with 10 seconds to go before the half to stall an Eagles drive; C.J. Henderson broke up a pass with 46 seconds left in the game, and Kale Watton made an interception with 25 seconds left to play in the contest, putting an end to any chances of a Rogers comeback.
Groesbeck (1-0) will be back on the road again this Friday night at 7:30 p.m., as they take on the McGregor Bulldogs at Bulldog Stadium in McGregor.
The Bulldogs fell to the Hillsboro Eagles this past Saturday in Hillsboro, 33-11.
