GriefShare Support Program Offers Healing in Groesbeck

The 13-week GriefShare support group program is returning to Groesbeck after a long hiatus. The First Methodist Church Groesbeck (FMG) has taken up the mantle after receiving the materials to start the class from First Baptist Groesbeck (FBG), which previously ran the program. FMG Pastor Ben Huebner and FBG Pastor Keith Collier discussed the revival of the program after FMG pastoral counselor Alisa Phillips expressed an interest in leading it.
“Anyone who has lost a loved one and needs guidance, compassion, and direction on their grief journey will find GriefShare to be that place. They are not alone,” Phillips said. “I have lost three significant people in my life—my firstborn son, Corey Phillips, and my parents, Donna and Kenneth Wise, who were part of the community of Groesbeck, Texas, for over 20 years. I would have benefited greatly from a GriefShare program during my journey of grief. A strong support system of family, friends, and those who have walked a similar journey of grief are everything when experiencing the loss of a loved one. One thing I know is that if you come, compassion, hope, and not being alone will be available to you as you start your own path of healing.”
According to the GriefShare website, “Since there are no neat, orderly stages of grief, you’ll learn helpful ways of coping with grief, in all its unpredictability—and gain solid support each step of the way.” Each weekly meeting will feature a video with respected counselors, pastors, and healthcare professionals discussing grief-related topics, along with personal stories of loss. After the video, participants will engage in a small-group discussion to share support and apply what they learned. Attendees will receive a book filled with valuable exercises to navigate their personal grieving process.
Topics include managing grief-related emotions such as loneliness, anxiety, sadness, anger, and regret; coping with changes in life and relationships; recognizing what’s normal in grief; and understanding what to do if they feel stuck or hopeless.
The program will begin Tuesday, Sept. 10, and continue through Dec. 10. Meetings will be held each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Methodist Activity Center, 212 W. Navasota St. For more details and to register, visit griefshare.org, email alisa@fmcgroesbeck.org , or call the FMG office at 254-729-5137. All materials are provided, and same-day walk-in registration will be available. Although the support group begins Sept. 10, new participants are welcome to join on any Tuesday.
Whether your bereavement experience is recent or not, this is an opportunity to be around people who understand what you are feeling.
