This Thursday marks the anniversary of a significant milestone for Groesbeck as the town transitioned to a modern dial telephone system. The Journal's front page on July 25, 1957, was dominated by an article titled “Monday, July 29, Groesbeck D-Day: Changeover to Dial Telephone System Draws Near,” highlighting the impending technological shift.
Early that Monday morning, while most residents were still asleep, the Gulf States Telephone Company’s “mechanical force” switched the town from the old manual system to the new dial system. This change meant that residents began dialing their numbers and listening for a dial tone, instead of waiting for an operator’s “number please” prompt.
The Gulf States Telephone Company invested over a quarter of a million dollars in upgrading Groesbeck’s telephone system over the first half of the year. This upgrade included equipment capable of accommodating twice the current number of telephone users without adding more switchboards. Additionally, arrangements with the Southwestern Bell Telephone system made Groesbeck a toll center for long-distance calls, ensuring that local operators could retain their positions.
At the time of the switch, telephone numbers followed a new format, consisting of two letters and five numbers. This change aligned with a nationwide numbering plan designed to improve the speed and efficiency of long-distance service. Previously, phone numbers in Groesbeck were just three digits long. While long-distance calls were still managed by operators for the time being, there were plans for users to handle these calls themselves in the near future.
The complete transition to the dial system was not finished until October 6, 1957. Nearby Kosse saw its own system switch in April 1958, concluding the broader regional upgrade.
This technological advancement came nearly two decades after similar changes began in more heavily populated areas of America, marking a significant step forward for Groesbeck and its residents.
