CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — American Red Cross volunteers from Connecticut have traveled to the Midwest to help those who have been affected by extreme weather in the area.

Cleanup is underway in Iowa after much of the northwestern part of the state experienced flooding last week. Groton resident Joe Apicelli is helping out by driving emergency response vehicles to deliver food and water to people in need.

“What we do is we supply these vehicles with snacks, water and hot meals that we’re going to take into the communities and some of these meals are going to sheltered persons in hotels and shelters we have designated,” Apicelli said.

He delivers more than 400 meals a day to people in Sioux Falls, Iowa. This is Apicelli’s 57th trip with the American Red Cross, and volunteers will remain there until mid-July.
