Massachusetts’ oldest men’s prison shut down. Here’s what it looks like inside
The Massachusetts Correctional Institute at Concord, the state’s oldest men’s prison, which officially concluded operations late last month, is frozen in time. Remnants and reminders of its status as a prison are everywhere throughout the campus — from notations on a chalkboard in its Building Responsible Adults Through Validation and Education Unit assigning “community responsibilities” to inmates to sheet music left behind inside its chapel. But no inmates have lived at the facility since June 28, and all of its staff has been moved out to other Department of Corrections facilities.

Police surround wooded area in Lincoln amid ongoing protest
Police surrounded a wooded area in Middlesex County after several protesters tied themselves to trees and construction equipment. Officers were lined along a forest on Route 2 in Lincoln. A group called “Protect the Lincoln Forest” shared photos with Boston 25 News inside the treeline Wednesday afternoon. They say that in the last two days, four protesters have been arrested by police. Two were allegedly taken into custody on Tuesday for refusing to leave the trees and two were arrested Wednesday for chaining themselves to construction vehicles.

MBTA announces extended Red Line shutdown
BOSTON – The MBTA announced on Thursday that it will suspend service on the Red Line's Braintree branch for 24 days in September.The shutdown will take place from September 6-29.In the stretch between JFK/UMass and Braintree, crews will repair 18 miles of track and remove over 20 speed restrictions. The MBTA says the work is expected to improve round-trip travel times by as much as 24 minutes.There will be no Red Line trains servicing North Quincy, Wollaston, Quincy Center, Quincy Adams, and Braintree during the shutdown.The MBTA is finalizing plans for shuttle buses but has not yet announced details."The work...

The MBTA snapped the last two 1980s-era Orange Line cars getting hauled out of the Wellington yard to a scrapyard yesterday. The T reports cars 1280 and 1281 were part of a set of 120 cars built between 1979 and 1981 with then fashionable faux wood paneling (alas, the T did not spring for the disco-ball option) and rode the local rails until 2022, when they were retired during the famous month-long Let's Fix All the Things program (that did not, in fact, result in in Fixes for All the Things) on the Orange Line.

DEDHAM – An unnamed juror in the Karen Read murder trial told Judge Beverly Cannone that he or she is "frightened for [his or her] personal safety" in a new affidavit filed to the court on Thursday. The request led Cannone to extend her prior order impounding the jury list "until and otherwise ordered."Read is accused of hitting and killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, with her SUV in 2022 and leaving him to die during a snowstorm.
