Records from Columbia County Animal Services reveal more information about a violent rabid fox attack in Grovetown that injured a grandfather and his 4-year-old grandson.

On July 2, an animal control officer responded to the 100 block of Cheryl Ann Drive in Grovetown for a fox-to-human bite, according to a report provided by the county.

They met with a man who said his wife was outside picking blueberries on July 1, while their 4-year-old son was jumping on a small trampoline, according to the report.

A brown and black fox came out from under a car trailer and bit the child on the ankle and foot, according to the report. The child's mother "kicked and punched" the fox until it released its bite and took the child inside.

When the mother went inside, she told her father-in-law, the child's grandfather, about the attack and he went outside with a gun to take care of the fox.

The fox came out from under the car trailer again and bit the grandfather on the leg and hand, according to the report. He tried shooting at the fox, "with no success," and then used a section of scaffolding to ultimately kill it.

The grandfather and 4-year-old were taken to Doctors Hospital where they received a series of shots, including a rabies shot, according to the report.

They are both receiving post-exposure rabies treatments, according to the Columbia County Health Department.

The animal control officer took the dead fox for testing and the Columbia County Environmental Health manager later confirmed the fox tested positive for rabies, according to the report.

On July 2, records show the Columbia County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about a second fox being captured near the intersection of Wentworth Place and Berkshire Way in Grovetown.

The caller said animal control placed a trap to catch the fox and it was contained inside the trap, according to the call. He was looking for someone to pick up the animal and the trap.

Columbia County officials said Friday the two incidents were "not related at all."

It is unclear if the second fox that was caught in the trap was tested for rabies.

Report any contact of humans and domestic animals with wild animals to Columbia County Health Department Environmental Health Section office at 706-868-3330 or Columbia County Animal Services at 706-541-4077.
