Klos co-founders Adam and Ian Klosowiak are all in on creating a unique array of carbon-fiber instruments fit for an adventurous lifestyle
The carbon-fiber revolution may not be televised, but it’s all over the internet and here in the pages of GP.The young Klosowiak brothers bring a unique perspective, focused on intelligent builds using modern materials in traditional forms. They make sonorous and highly playable carbon instruments at lower prices than other custom manufacturers, and market them to adventure lifestylists, who benefit most from the resulting durability. Their ads feature Klos guitars on the backs of hikers and sailors, and hilarious online videos show players using their wares as golf clubs and baseball bats.A successful Kickstarter campaign for the Travel Guitar put...
Chris Shiflett on trying to convince Joe Bonamassa his Murphy Lab ‘59 Les Paul was genuine
On his new solo EP, Starry Nights & Campfire Lights, Foo Fighters’ Chris Shiflett has ditched tube amps for a Quad Cortex. But he had some very specific guitars in mind to help achieve his desired tones. That included a Gibson Murphy Lab ‘59 Les Paul reissue, an instrument he tried – and subsequently failed – to fool avid gear collector Joe Bonamassa into thinking it was the real deal. “It was a half-hearted effort,” he admits during a new Total Guitar interview. “I had no illusion there, I knew he would clock it, of course.”The rouse was attempted while Bonamassa guested...
Laney says its new Lionheart Foundry solid-state combos can rival tube amps
Laney’s new Lionheart Foundry amp series aims to distill the majesty of tube amps into compact and lightweight 60-watt solid-state builds, and the firm believes they can go toe-to-toe with tube amps. Contrary to Fender’s approach with its Tone Master series of amps, which swap out tubes in favor of DSP modeling, Laney has led with analog tech. These components help match the dynamic, touch-sensitive response of tubes – a quirk that still holds much sway in an increasingly digital amp world. Each unit in the three-strong combo amp series features dual clean and lead channels and 60/1W power switching. They...
Chris Shiflett on ditching tube amps for a Quad Cortex onstage, and on his new solo EP
Tube amps remain a core part of Foo Fighters' live setup, but when it comes to his solo work, Chris Shiflett has jumped into the modeling world headfirst. His latest EP, Starry Nights & Campfire Lights, features a country version of Thin Lizzy’s 1976 hit Cowboy Song and an Americana-flavored take on Hanoi Rocks’ Don’t You Ever Leave Me. But despite its nostalgic feel, the tones behind the record are anything but. “I used a Quad Cortex for all the electric guitars,” he says in the new issue of Total Guitar, meaning that all acoustics were treated differently. It was a decision spurred...
Dweezil Zappa gets a “microphonic” signature Shabat guitar with some tricks up its sleeve
California’s Shabat Guitars has created a signature guitar for Dweezil Zappa, the uniquely-spec'd Lynx DZ.Zappa says the Lynx DZ project began when chief luthier Avi Shabat presented a prototype model – based on the former's heavily modded Lynx – to the guitarist “out of the blue.” Aesthetically, it maintains that after-market chop shop vibe, thanks in no small part to the intensely relic’d look that chips away at its black nitrocellulose Lacquer finish, and its mismatched white and gold three-ply pickguards. Electronics-wise, the instrument shows its Zappa-esque character with an HSS configuration and a secret weapon hidden in its middle pickup....
Fender enters the wireless system market with the small but feature-packed Telepath
Fender has made its first foray into wireless guitar systems with the Telepath, a small-but-mighty innovation that the company hopes can see it challenge well-established manufacturers. As technology improves, the need for bulky systems has steadily declined, as Mooer Audio’s Air P10 can attest, and it’s a mantle Fender is more than willing to take on. But despite its unassuming size and looks, the Telepath comes packed with a host of unique features.Fender is talking up its low latency and “sparkling clarity,” which stretches out some 70m from the transmitter, making it a viable option for even the biggest stages. It...
Fender 70th Anniversary Ultra Stratocaster HSS review
In celebration of the Stratocaster’s debut in the spring of 1954, Fender has launched a series of 70th Anniversary models for 2024 that range from the American Vintage II 1954 Stratocaster in two-color sunburst to the latest Ultra Stratocaster HSS, in an Amethyst finish that pushes the boundaries of automotive technologies. Fender’s EVP of product design, Justin Norvell, tells us, “We reached out to paint suppliers to see what’s happening in the automotive space, because part of Fender’s history is car colors. We’ve been playing with flip-flop-type colors, like Chrome Glow on the H.E.R model – one of the first of...
The 1964 Welson Kinton V3 – whack job or Italian beauty... or both?
Of the many weird guitars from the 1960s, the Italians are my favorites. EKO, Vox, Crucianelli, Wandre, and Gemeli... it’s hard to keep up. The Welson company, like its Italian neighbor EKO, produced guitars under many names and even made a few models for Vox and Wurlitzer. Welson was founded in the 1920s, in the city of Castelfidardo, by Orlando Quagliardi. The company made accordions but switched to manufacturing electric guitars as demand for the instrument increased in the ’60s. The 1964 Kinton V3 model shown here reveals that Welson was a fine instrument maker, even though the delightfully cheesy accordion-style...
