GULFPORT, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The Mississippi Aquarium is a must see the next time you’re in Gulfport.

There are several areas to explore at the aquarium. There is a river outside that you can get a look at from above. And unlike most of our natural rivers, the water is clear so you can get a look at it. You can then go down a picturesque ramp and see it from below.

There’s an aviary where you can get a birds eye view, or at least a good view of the birds up close.

There is a giant tank inside one building. You can start up at the top where you can see and feel the fish. They don’t mind, and they don’t bite. Midway down is a tunnel. There’s fish above you, beside you and down below you.

All the way down are several ports for looking back up into the tank, three stories tall.

“We opened on the 15th anniversary of Katrina to really showcase what the coast has transformed into. And it’s really a first class location now. And this was kind of the cherry on the top,” said Kurt Allen, president and CEO of the Mississippi Aquarium.

There’s more people here during the summer, but after school starts on a weekday, it should be fairly quiet. Personally, I enjoy the kids being kids and getting excited about what all’s in the world.
