Prichard, AL — A father, husband, and longtime community leader, Napoleon Bracy, Jr., announced his candidacy to represent his newly constructed home district, Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, and he’s taking the voices of those unheard for far too long with him.

A native of Prichard, Alabama, Napoleon Bracy, Jr.’s life is a testament to what it means to take care of home. The youngest of seven, Napoleon is a man of humble beginnings, and though an overused sentiment, if you were to drive by Prichard Avenue today, you would see what he means. He began what would be a lifelong calling of advocacy and public service in the 7th grade in student government, and from Blount High School to the Alabama State House of Representatives, he continued to redefine what it means to shine a light on those who reminded him of the sun even on the darkest days. Living by his motto, “RESULTS MATTER,” Napoleon is entering this Congressional run backed by himself and his work.

“After much thought and a rewarding 13 years in the Alabama Legislature, I am proud to announce that we are taking this thing to Congress. When I decided to run for Prichard City Council at the age of 26, I came in with only one goal in mind—to do whatever I could to change the reality I grew up in. By this time in my life, I had seen the impact of poverty firsthand and lost too many people who couldn’t survive the elements of living in a community like mine because they didn’t have the resources they needed to live day by day. God made a way for me when the odds said I wouldn’t live past the age of 35, and from that, I knew that it was my responsibility to make a way for others.”

Napoleon Bracy, Jr.’s electoral record in the Alabama House of Representatives speaks for itself. After joining the Legislature on November 2, 2010, at the age of 30, he began blazing trails in the State House, becoming Chairman of the Alabama Legislative Black Caucus in 2013. Bracy went on to serve as the youngest chairman of the Mobile County Legislative Delegation and the first and only African American to chair the Mobile County Democratic Executive Committee. He currently serves as the chairman of the Alabama House Legislative Black Caucus.

He graduated from Blount High School in 1995 and Dillard University of New Orleans in 2000. Additionally, Bracy received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Pentecostal Bible College of Tuskegee, Alabama in 2014. He works full-time for Austal USA, a contractor for the US Department of Defense, all while Representing Alabama House District 98.

“I never imagined a kid like me would ever graduate from college, nevertheless have a career in electoral politics. And despite everything that I have seen over the years, I feel the same way about our opportunity to pick the representative of our choosing. This is our time, our time to have a seat at the table built on the backs of those who, my entire lifetime, had been disregarded by their Congressional representatives due to their voting record or area code. At the heart of progress is education, healthcare, economics, and workforce development. And in communities where poverty is still real and economic development is scarce, we have watched the world grow around us while feeling the strain of disinvestment with no one to stand in the gap. The only way we can stand up for ourselves is if we stand together, and I am asking the residents of Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District to stand with me while we take this fight to Washington.”

Bracy is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Prince Hall Masonry and 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile. A few of his accolades include: Humanitarian of the Year Award, Drug Free Mobile Leadership Award, Hometown Hero Award, Mobile Bays Top Forty under 40, 2014 Alabama Democratic Legislator of the Year and Democratic National Convention Delegate for President Barack Obama, Secretary Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden. He is married to Melody, and they have three daughters: Kena, Brooklynn and Camille. The Bracy’s are members of Bethesda Christian Center.

Napoleon Bracy, Jr. for Congress Campaign kickoff details will be announced soon.
