Montgomery, Alabama – The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced the sentencing of a former executive director for the Alabama Association for Career and Technical Education for embezzlement of federal funds and tax crimes.

This week, a federal judge sentenced Doris Joann Gilmore, 62, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, to 37 months in prison. In addition, the judge ordered that Gilmore serve three years of supervised release following her prison term.

According to U.S. Department of Justice, Gilmore embezzled federal grant funds received by the Alabama Association for Career and Technical Education while serving as executive director. Statements made during her sentencing hearing indicated that the embezzlement may have taken place for more than a decade.

Gilmore also failed to send to the Internal Revenue Service payroll taxes that had been withheld during the first quarter of 2022. Gilmore pleaded guilty , and the judge ordered her to pay $2,832,486.33 in restitution to the Alabama Association for Career and Technical Education and $802,508.88 to the IRS.

“Doris Gilmore was placed in a position of trust and should have directed these federal funds to their intended programs,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown. “When these funds are illegally earmarked for personal use the citizens of Alabama suffer, and the FBI along, with our state, local, and federal partners, will hold those responsible accountable.”
