Montgomery Housing Authority Awarded 9% Tax Credit for New Affordable Housing
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA (December 18, 2023) – The Montgomery Housing Authority (MHA) is pleased to announce that the Alabama Housing Finance Authority (AHFA) awarded the agency a 9% tax credit for Columbus Square Phase III. The 9% tax credit is a valuable resource that empowers us to continue providing safe and decent affordable housing for Montgomery families, says Chairman John F. Knight, Jr. AHFA administers multifamily programs to create affordable rental housing by providing funding and tax incentives that help developers build or rehabilitate properties for Alabama’s low-income families.
Lowndes County Area Chamber of Commerce hosts end of year meeting
By Jamal Thomas Yesterday, The Lowndes County Area Chamber of Commerce (LCACAC) hosted its last meeting of the year. One initiative that of LCACOC is to create an emergency medical service (EMS) and ambulance service provider for the county. LCACOC CEO and President Dr. O.L. Hubert, shared that a proposal for a county ambulance service is in progress. “We only have one ambulance in the entire county, and we do not have any hospitals or urgent care.” he said. According to Hubert, the chamber is proposing 4 ambulances in Lowndes County. One will serve as a back-up vehicle. The others will be stationed in Hayneville, Ft. Deposit, and White Hall. Lanisha Hall with UAB talked about The Epiphany Study, an American Heart Association funded research study conducted by the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine. The goal is to help lower rates of high blood pressure among Black men and women living in the Black Belt by reducing barriers to healthy lifestyles.
Mayor Reed vetos insurance ordinance
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed today vetoed a City Council ordinance attempting to intervene in the management of the City’s supplemental health insurance program for retired Medicare-eligible employees. In addition to keeping a coverage plan that includes lower premiums, little or no copays, and fewer out-of-pocket expenses for those retirees, the mayor’s veto will save the City from paying at least $6 million it would have owed providers for breach of contract, which the Council has not budgeted.
Holding Pattern
The dictionary defines holding pattern as the flight path maintained by an aircraft awaiting permission to land, or as a state or period of no progress or change. If you are a seasoned air traveler, then you have most likely experienced a holding pattern when the plane is unable to land because of unfavorable weather conditions. The pilot will announce to all the flyers that he must maintain a holding pattern until he receives directions from the control tower. This is common, so planes must be prepared and have enough fuel to safely stay in the air until it has been cleared to land. You begin to hear the passengers mumbling, “How long? Why? What is the problem? When will this end?”

Montgomery, AL- Last week, The Council on Substance Abuse- NCADD 50 th Anniversary Luncheon took place last week at the RSA Activity Center. COSA Executive Director Shereda Finch expressed thanks and appreciation to supporters, staff, and attendees. “Fifty years is a testament to our dedication to alcohol and substance abuse” Finch said. “I have an awesome team. It takes passion, commitment, love, and hope for our staff to do the work that they do.”
Montgomery Election Center partners with MCCPL
By Jamal Thomas Montgomery, AL- Last week, Montgomery County Probate Judge JC Love announced a partnership with Montgomery City-County Public Library (MCCPL) to promote voter registration and voter engagement. Voter registration kiosks will be placed in each MCCPL location. “We are the first Election Center to use these types of kiosks to promote voter registration” said Judge Love. The Montgomery County Election Center first partnered with colleges and universities to help college students with a more secure way to register to vote. Voter registration kiosks are on each campus on Montgomery County. Before the kiosk, many students would register to vote through various organizations. Unfortunately, many of those organizations failed to turn in voter registration form to the Office of Secretary of State. As a result, many college students were not on voter rolls and had to complete provisional ballots during Elections. In addition to colleges and universities, voter registration kiosks are also in each high school in Montgomery County. According to Judge Love, the partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools helps engage high school students in the election process. “We are giving residents a simple and accesible way to exercise their right to vote” said MCCPL Director Zella-Ques Holmes in her remarks. Dresses for Pink hosts Christmas Ball
By Jamal Thomas Montgomery, AL- Dresses for Pink hosted its Inaugural Christmas Ball on Sunday evening. The organization helps provide resources for individuals and their families affected by cancer. The event was held at the COD Event Center. Local residents Icon Robinson and Ayanna Maxwell shared their stories and experiences about surviving cancer. Psalmist Kwatasian Hunt and Psalmist La’ticia C. Ezell graced the audience through song. Special guests were Montgomery County Probate Judge JC Love, Judge Monet Gaines. And Judge JR Gaines.

Montgomery Man Pleads Guilty to Scheme Costing an Elderly Victim Over $95,000
Montgomery, Alabama – Acting United States Attorney Jonathan S. Ross announced that Nicholas Houston Allen, 36, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud. The convictions result from Allen’s victimizing an elderly Montgomery resident. The United States Secret Service and the Alabama Securities Commission provided valuable assistance in the investigation and prosecution of this case.
