HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Rain totals have been uneven across the Tennessee Valley Saturday through Monday.

With Monday’s rain and storms being isolated in coverage, many stayed cloudy and dry. Those who were lucky enough to see the rain experienced excessive rainfall. Gurley received over two inches prompting a flash flood warning for the area.

A better widespread coverage of rain and storms is forecast for Tuesday. The first round of rain is currently moving through this morning, with pockets of moderate to heavy rain embedded within.

There will be a brief break in the precipitation before some redevelop occurs by the afternoon. During the peak heating hours, is when the best chance for storms will be.

A combination of low clouds, fog, and rain will lead to low visibility at times.

Winds will remain out of the south-southwest supporting the continued flow of warm air and moisture into the region. With dew points in the 70s, it will feel humid and uncomfortable. Highs are forecast to reach the low 80s.

Storms will be capable of gusty winds, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall that could lead to localized flooding or flash flooding.

Precipitable water values are above two inches on model data which is around the daily maximum of climatology for the day. Precipitable water is the total amount of moisture throughout the atmosphere. Think of it like a sponge that’s soaked with water and wringing it out of all its moisture. High precipitable water values can lead to flash flooding. It’s something we’re continuing to track through the week.
