Reminder of Closures in Major Guthrie County Towns for July 4th
The 4th of July is tomorrow, and many people will be celebrating, meaning there will be many businesses and services that are closed in Guthrie County. In Stuart, City Hall and the Utilities Office will both be closed tomorrow, and return to regular hours Friday. The Stuart Public Library will be closed until Monday in observance of the holiday. Garbage services will not be affected.
Update on Guthrie County First Responders Association
(Guthrie Co) Jotham Arber provided an update on the Guthrie County First Responders Association to the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. Arber said the goal of the First Responders Association is to try and build first responders in each of the fire districts and work with the current services to transport.
Iowa Auditor Rob Sand to Visit Adair and Guthrie Counties Next Week
Adair and Guthrie Counties will be seeing a state official next Tuesday, July 9th. Sand will be at Greenfield City Park from 1:45-2:45pm, and at Mitchell Park in Guthrie Center from 3:15-4:15pm. He will be available to answer questions that constituents may have about some of the new bills that have been passed, and work to help bring information that those in attendance may be looking for. According to Sand’s office, a recent poll shows that he has the highest job approval rating and lowest job disapproval rating of any state official.
Guthrie County Board of Supervisors Discuss Future of Compensation Board
(Guthrie Co) The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors held a discussion this morning on the future of the Compensation Board. As of July 1st, the Compensation Board no longer exists. The Iowa legislature passed a bill that allows the Board of Supervisors to decide whether to have a Compensation Board or not. If they choose not to, then the Board of Supervisors will act as the Compensation Board. Compensation Boards were in charge of reviewing and comparing elected official’s salaries and recommending a compensation schedule.
Guthrie County Sheriff’s report, 7/1/24
(Guthrie Center, Iowa) – Sheriff’s officials in Guthrie County say no injuries were reported following two accidents that took place last week. Wednesday morning, a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 18-year-old Mason Joseph Sawyer, of Coon Rapids, was traveling north on Andrews Terrace. When Sawyer attempted to turn into a driveway, the SUV went out control and rolled over before coming to rest against a tree. Authorities say he was driving too fast for conditions, but there were no citations issued. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $4,500.

Regional Unemployment Rises Nearly A Half Point To 2.7% In May 2024
Unemployment rates in the seven-county region rose by nearly a half point in May 2024 from the prior month but held stable with last year’s rates, according to data released this week by Iowa Workforce Development (IWD). Carroll led the area with the lowest unemployment at 2.0 percent, 0.4 points higher than April but 0.5 points below May 2023. Audubon County followed close behind at 2.1 percent, 0.4 points higher than the previous month and 0.1 points lower than last year. Greene County’s unemployment rose 0.7 points from April to 2.3 percent in May, which is 0.4 points higher than in May 2023. Guthrie County and Calhoun County’s rates increased by 0.6 points to 2.5 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively, while Sac County jumped by nearly a whole percentage point to 3.1 percent. Crawford County again recorded the highest unemployment in the region at 4.2 percent, 0.2 points higher than in April but a half point below last year. The average unemployment rate for the region was 2.7 percent, below Iowa’s 2.8 percent figure and the national 3.9 percent rate. County-by-county unemployment data is not seasonally adjusted like state and national numbers. The full IWD dataset for May 2024 unemployment is included below.

Governor Volunteer Award Recipients from Guthrie County
Some residents of Guthrie County are receiving the Governor Volunteer Award today in Ankeny. Cathy Ballard of Guthrie Center and Paula Wachholtz of Panora have both been recognized as 2024 recipients of the award, with this year’s ceremony being held at 2pm today at Ankeny high School. Ballard and Wachholtz are two of over 270 individuals that are awardees for 2024, with over 400 total awards going out for groups and individuals.
