Momma taught me how to make the best cornbread. It's so easy! I've added an optional ingredient that makes it taste similar to a certain popular brand (but feel free to leave it out if you want, I do sometimes).

We like to eat our cornbread in beans, in stew, in a cold glass of milk or buttermilk, or just like this ⬆ hot out of the oven with real butter! Yummmm!

    Southern Homemade Cornbread Recipe

    Ingredients:

    • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal
    • 1/2 cup flour
    • 4 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup sugar (optional)
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 egg
    • 1/4 cup oil or fat (such as melted butter or vegetable oil)

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
    2. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan for a thinner cornbread. For thicker cornbread, you can use a smaller pan. (Cast iron is great too, if you have it!)
    3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
    4. Add in the milk, egg, and the oil or melted fat, stirring just until combined. Do not overmix or the cornbread will be tough.
    5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.
    6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until the top looks dry and the edges are nice and brown.
    7. Let the cornbread cool slightly in the pan before cutting into squares and serving.

    Enjoy your homemade cornbread!
