My husband grew these delicious Tromboncino squash in our garden, and this simple recipe has quickly become our favorite way to enjoy them. The flavors are so fresh and satisfying, yet it's incredibly easy to make. We love how the natural sweetness of the squash shines through with just a bit of butter and a light steam.

If you've never tried growing Tromboncino squash, I highly recommend it! They’re easy to cultivate, and just a couple of plants will yield an impressive harvest. We grow ours on a trellis, which not only saves space but also makes picking them a breeze. Check out the pictures below to see how our garden looks.

I hope you’ll give this recipe a try and discover how delightful this squash can be!

    Simply Delicious Steamed Tromboncino Squash

Tromboncino squash, also known as Zucchetta, is a delightful summer squash with a sweet and delicate flavor. This recipe highlights its natural taste with simple ingredients, making it a perfect side dish for any meal.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 young and tender Tromboncino squash (about 1-2 pounds)
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • ¼ cup water
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

    Instructions:

    1. Prepare the Squash:
      • Rinse the Tromboncino squash thoroughly under cool water.
      • Trim the ends, and if the squash is very long, you can cut it in half for easier handling.
      • Slice the squash into ¼-inch thick rounds.
    2. Preheat the Skillet:
      • Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt completely, swirling the pan to coat the bottom evenly.
    3. Cook the Squash:
      • Arrange the squash slices in the skillet in a single layer, or as close as possible. This helps them cook evenly.
      • Pour the ¼ cup of water over the squash.
      • Cover the skillet with a lid and let the squash steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until the squash becomes tender. The time may vary depending on the thickness of the slices and the exact size of the squash.
    4. Season and Finish:
      • Once the squash is tender, remove the lid and allow any remaining water to evaporate.
      • Season the squash with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
    5. Serve:
      • Serve hot as a side dish.
