In Shanghai, researchers are testing an amazing new technology that may help solve a serious problem for the visually impaired - not enough "Guide Dogs".

AI Chinese robotic guide dogs are being field-tested with great success. The hope for the future is to overcome two major obstacles with seeing-eye dogs:

    1. There is a huge shortage of guide dogs and only a few visually impaired people have them
    2. They are Expensive - (caused by the shortage and massive training involved) - With robots, having a guide dog will be affordable.

"It's impossible to solve this problem with dogs. Robots are a lot like cars and can be mass-produced in the same way as cars. It will become more affordable." head of the team, Professor Gao Feng of Jiao Tong University, says.

The test team at Shanghai's University is being helped by a married couple Li Fei, 41, and Zhu Sibin, 42, who are visually impaired. They are using Chinese-language commands to train the robot.

The tests look very promising for the future of AI Guide Dogs assisting the visually impaired. As the new technology grows we are starting to see what is in store for the children of today.

The Chinese are also researching humanoid robots for household use. The likeness is astounding and in my opinion - a little scary!
