The removal and adoption of 24 wild horses out of a South Reno construction area caused a bit of a stir by wild horse enthusiasts protesting in Carson City.

However, the Nevada Department of Agriculture Director Dr. J.J. Goicoechea says they began the removal process of the horses from a development property on Wednesday, Aug. 7, saying they had to do so to protect them from active construction.

Goicoechea says the NDA has been working with the Wild Horse Connection to help remove the wild horses. This began on Wednesday, and the nonprofit had until Tuesday night to relocate the horses but were unsuccessful.

The NDA has been working with Wild Horse Connections to manage the horses located on the Virginia Range for years.

Now, in recent news, The Wild Horse Connection was offered first choice and decided to adopt all 24 horses.

The Wild Horse Connection's mission is:

To keep the Wild Horses of the Virginia Range free by educating the community about living with our Mustangs and rescuing those that have been removed from the range.
We work with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, City, County, Law Enforcement, Developers and Land Owners to achieve this. Wild Horse Connection installs fencing, gates and cattle guards and provides water resources in the higher range so the horses stay high up and not down on our community streets. We train our rescues so they can be used for therapy and emotional support and provide emergency resources to those in need. We connect our community in order to protect the Wild Mustangs by education and awareness.

According to American Wild Horse Campaign and The Sierra Club Nevada has the most Mustangs in the country. There are over 43,000 horses in their herds in Nevada. This is more than 60% of all wild horses in the United States.

Wild Horses wondering the streets of Silver Springs, NVPhoto byroadtripamerica.com

I have been a resident of Silver Springs, NV since 2001. And there have been many a morning, afternoon, and evening I have welcomed a small herd of ponies onto my acre.

They love chewing on our Russian Olive trees, trashing our flower beds, and leaving their earlier meals in the yard for me to clean up. Ergo, we have learned to keep our front gate shut more often than a wide-open invitation.

The first time I walked out my front door with a big mare and her colt staring me in the eyes, I almost poo-pooed myself but after the initial shock, all I could do was grin from ear to ear.

It was then I realized one of the primary treasures in the Silver State was Mustangs. I still marvel at their simple beauty and how they can bring a smile even to the saddest heart.

Article is missing a large point. Who is going to follow up and make sure WHC doesn't just turn around and release the 24 "adopted" horses?
