    Washington County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2015

    The five members of the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame who were inducted in the hall's 29th class in 2015:

    Heather Aleshire

    According to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame: “Aleshire, a 1995 Clear Spring High School graduate, was a basketball star for the Blazers and Hagerstown Junior College. At Clear Spring, Aleshire averaged 32.3 points and 12.2 rebounds per game, becoming the Tri-State area's most prolific scorer with a record 2,418 career points. As a senior, she earned Maryland all-state honors. She went on to become the first woman at HJC to reach 1,000 career points, finishing with 1,216. Aleshire, who was a two-time All-America second-team honoree with the Hawks, finished her playing career at the University of Richmond.”

    Clyde Barnhart

    According to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame: “Barnhart played baseball for nine seasons (1920-28) with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who won National League titles in 1925 and 1927 and were World Series champions in 1925. Barnhart played third base, left field and right field for the Pirates and finished with a career batting average of .295. His most productive season came in 1925, when he batted .325 with 114 RBIs. Barnhart, who went to college at Shippensburg (Pa.), was born in Buck Valley, Pa., and died at age 84 in Hagerstown, where he is buried at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.”

    Donnie Dotter

    According to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame: “Dotter, a 1974 Williamsport High School graduate, was a standout in football and track and field for the Wildcats. He helped lead Williamsport to three straight Washington County titles in track and field, setting meet records in the 100- and 220-yard dashes and long and triple jumps. Dotter continued his football career at the University of Maryland. He played in three bowl games and lettered twice for the Terps, specializing in kickoff returns. Maryland went 28-8 during Dotter's playing time.”

    Lynne Vantz Nelson

    According to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame: “Nelson graduated from Hancock Middle-Senior High School in the 1970s as a champion shooter on the 4H rifle team. Later, she became a world champion powerlifter. After prevailing in both the open and masters (40-and-older) divisions at the United States Powerlifting Association national championships in 2005 in the 165-pound division — posting a personal-best meet total of 1,026 pounds in the deadlift, squat and bench press — Nelson competed at the World Masters Championships in South Africa later that year. At the world meet, she won gold in the deadlift and bronze for overall total. In the book 'Fitter for Life: The Secrets of 25 Masters of Fitness,' author Ed Mayhew wrote: '(Nelson) is not some huge colossus, but pound for pound she's one of the strongest women in the world.'”

    Don Stoner

    According to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame: “The late Don Stoner left his mark as a cross country, track and field and basketball coach at Smithsburg High School. Under his guidance, the Leopards won three straight state titles in girls track and field (1977-79), and state titles in cross country (1977) and girls cross country (1978). Stoner compiled a 176-108 record as the boys basketball coach from 1965-80. The annual Don Stoner Cross Country Invitational at Smithsburg is named in his memory, as is the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame's annual coach of the year award.”
