A Frederick County Circuit Court judge on Wednesday sentenced a Hagerstown man to life in prison after he was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder for firing at a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputy in 2022.

Lookman-Khalil Abolajo Bello, 30, was given an active sentence of life plus 15 years, in addition to suspended time, for the incident that involved him shooting at the deputy on March 18, 2022.

Bello fired 12 shots at Deputy Christian Lucente after an attempted traffic stop for a suspected driving under the influence, authorities said. A vehicle pursuit, then a foot chase, ensued.

Lucente, who was not injured, returned fire, striking Bello three times.

The Herald-Mail confirmed with the Frederick County prosecutor's office that Bello's active sentence includes the five-year mandatory minimum for three of his convictions, totaling the additional 15 years in his sentence. Those three convictions were using a gun in the commission of a crime of violence, use of a high-capacity magazine in the commission of a crime of violence and firearm possession by a person convicted of a prior crime of violence.
