BOONSBORO, Md. ( DC News Now ) — They are a dedicated group of volunteers working from the United Methodist Church church basement, making quilts to help the less fortunate.

This team meets weekly and makes quilt bedding for Hagerstown’s the Hope, a men’s Homeless Shelter, and Brooke’s House, a women’s residential addiction treatment center.

“We see this as a ministry from the church,” Becky Hein said. “We enjoy working together. It’s a nice fellowship group but we feel like we’re doing some good in the community.”

Other beneficiaries of their work are disaster relief efforts across the globe, community nursing homes and the Families in Need nonprofit to help low-income households.

    What brings these volunteers together?

“I do it because I need to reach out in some way to my community,” Margie Moats said. “This is a way I can do it.”

The church project is rewarding for the volunteers as well.

“I think we look forward to the fellowship,” Dottie Labrush said. “It’s just something special.”

    More volunteers are always welcome.

“If you’re looking for a way to contribute to your community,” Moats said. “Consider being a part of what we do.”
