Letters to the editor: Take future of our planet seriously

It's time to take future of our planet seriously

Inflation, immigration and reproductive freedom are important issues that will weigh heavily on voters minds this fall. Somewhere lower on the list is the health and future of the planet Earth and its inhabitants.

It's time to start calling climate change what it really is. Record world temperatures and the accompanying natural disasters are the result of global warming induced by greenhouse gases. The science and the evidence is clear.

The Democratic side of our political equation embraces science and supports clean energy initiatives. The Republican side is in denial and threatens to reverse the progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Here in the Mid-Atlantic region, we have so far been spared the devastation of a hotter planet experienced in other parts of the country and the world. The days are surely coming, however, when global warming comes to a town near you.

Presidential candidates need to take cognitive exams

There now is an opportunity for President Biden to establish a new tradition, making cognitive health exam results public.

But, since there are questions about both Biden's and Trump's cognitive health, the voters would be well served if both candidates visited McLean Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham and the largest psychiatric affiliate of Harvard Medical School, which has been named the No. 1 hospital in the nation for psychiatric care by U.S. News & World Report for the second year in a row, according to results released in the 2023-2024 “Best Hospitals” rankings.

Of course, the results of the cognitive health examinations should be made public.

Isn't this much better than a so-called “debate” in which the candidates are allowed to frequently lie?

Maybe both candidates will pass the exam or maybe both candidates will fail the exam, but at least the results will be made public for all voters to ponder.

We should all remember we are a nation of immigrants

Donald Trump's entire campaign seems to be based on immigration.

He constantly criticizes Joe Biden. Yet, it is the Republicans who blocked a bipartisan bill on immigration at Trump's orders.

We should all remember we are a nation of immigrants. I'm thankful there wasn't a president like Trump when my ancestors arrived here.

What can be done to protect frequently hit utility pole?

There is a utility pole on Potomac Avenue in front of the Korean War Memorial that has been hit and destroyed — mostly needing replacement — about 100 times in the 50+ years I've lived out here.

It takes hours of hard work in all kinds of awful conditions to replace that pole — removing the bad pole; positioning and stabilizing the new one; supporting the wires and cables the pole carries, etc. — all, this time, in blazing heat in the 90's, this time.

Meanwhile, the neighborhood does without A/C in that 90's heat, and any and all of other electrical machinery.

Despite all of the above, the utilities department of city government refuses to even return calls to discuss what can be done to protect that pole.

Some of us have suggested surrounding the base of the pole with rebar-reinforced concrete bollards. They have been using some sort of plastic affairs which this past week proved useless as the vehicle flew over them, squashed them and hit the pole.

If any of us had been able to have a conversation with the head of utilies division and felt something reasonable were going to be done about that pole this letter would not be here.

But next time — and there will be another one — it might take more than four to five hours in grueling sun or freezing cold to make repairs.

Conservative think tank is creator of Project 2025

It is nauseating to read Patricia Taylor’s comment about Project 2025.

She always appears as the know it all for anything anti-Trump.

The truth of the matter is the Project 2025 is a political playbook created by the Heritage Foundation and dozens of other conservative groups, not Trump.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, collaborated with more than 100 conservative groups for Project 2025, also known as the Presidential Transition Project.

“I know nothing about Project 2025,” Trump wrote in a July 5 Truth Social post. “I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them.”

Project 2025 said it “does not speak for any candidate or campaign” in a July 5 post on X, formerly Twitter. Its playbook is comprised of suggestions the coalition believes will benefit the "next conservative president."

Document-handling case should not have been dismissed

We were told by a judge, handpicked by Trump, that’s it’s fine for an ex-president to take our country’s most precious secrets, tell people not cleared in any way classified information, show secret maps to entertainers, keep nuclear information and lists of foreign assets in bathrooms, ballrooms and other publicly accessible places, and spilled all over closets like Mom’s old recipes.

And when the government asks for the people’s property back, information people have died to protect, it’s okay to lie, to claim you don’t have these things, to give back a little, then lie more, and repeat until law enforcement is forced to come to your club-home, where they find it all in a complete mess, in an open club whose member roles are filled with enemy spies.

That’s okay , if you are Donald Trump and your judge is Aileen Cannon, and the judge over her is Clarence Thomas.

Disgraceful. It is up to us to save ourselves.

    Organize, mobilize and vote!

The Democrats are in a panic mode

The Democrats were so happy Biden won the 2020 election. Now they have a president who will support their special interests.

As with all things, time goes on and after the recent debate with Trump the American people have seen Biden is not up to the job. Now the Democrats want to kick him to the curb. Reporting states Adam Schiff is telling Biden donors to not donate. Nancy Pelosi needs to remove herself but instead she's working with Chuck Schumer to remove Biden. The Democrats are in a panic mode.

You can see there are "Fair-Weather Friends" even in politics.

It's truly sad the Democrats and republicans can't work together to keep our great country safe.

    God bless America!

    I love this country!
