A Hagerstown-area man, using the name of a character who strikes it lucky in "Vegas Vacation," and a construction co-worker won $1 million recently from a Maryland Lottery scratch-off game, according to the agency.

The Maryland Lottery allows winners to remain anonymous.

The Hagerstown-area man chose to use the pseudonym "Mr. Papagiorgio" to share his story in a news release the Lottery issued Thursday about the winners. Mr. Papagiorgio is a pseudonym as well for Rusty Griswold, the son in the family featured in the "Vacation" movies about a family's vacation misadventures. In this case, the younger Griswold has some good luck in Las Vegas.

'Payday scratcher Fridays' turns into a big payday indeed

The Hagerstown-area resident's good luck came with he and his co-worker buying $10 scratch-off tickets at the Sheetz at 7301 Executive Way in Frederick, according to the Lottery release.

The two men followed their "weekend workday" routine, with the Frederick, Md., man buying iced coffee and doughnuts, while the Hagerstown-area man bought them each a scratch-off.

The local man loves "payday scratcher Fridays" and prefers higher-priced games, so he bought each of them a 100x The Cash scratch-off, which costs $20 per ticket, according to the Lottery.

They headed to work and "pulled in," grabbing the tickets to scratch. The Frederick man's ticket revealed the $1 million winnings.

"He goes ghost white and said, 'Did we win one million dollar?' " the Hagerstown-area man recounted to the Lottery. They celebrated by hitting the steering wheel and jumping out of the vehicle to shout "Woo." Some passersby shouted back "Woo, too."

What will the lucky duo do with their winnings?

After contacting their wives and bosses, they got permission to take the day off. The pair decided to split the winnings and went to play golf, the release states.

The Hagerstown-area man plans to keep a longtime promise to his wife by taking her on a honeymoon. He's also going to save some of the winnings for retirement.

The Frederick man plans to pay bills and save money for college for his son.

The Sheetz on the south side of Frederick will get a $1,000 bonus for selling the $1 million winning ticket.

The 100x the Cash game started in January. Three of the game's seven $1 million top prizes were still out there as of Monday.
