CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) Bee Line Chapter received a national first place award, as well as the Evelyn Cole Peters Award for Excellence, from the NSDAR American Heritage Committee.

The NSDAR American Heritage Committee exists to preserve, encourage and celebrate the nation’s rich artistic traditions through contests in Art and Sculpture, Crafts, Fiber Arts, Literature and Drama, Music, Jewelry and Photography. Each year thousands of entries from DAR chapters across the United States are judged at the state, division and national levels.

The Bee Line chapter's winning entry, a play entitled “Did She Make It,” considers whether the United States’ first national flag was in fact created by Betsy Ross, as is traditionally claimed by her family and others, or whether that popularly held piece of national lore is simply patriotic fiction. The play combines factual information with fictional conversations and activities.

The Bee Line chapter's entry was managed by chapter member JoAnn Bailey. Other members of the winning group were Marilyn Bremilst, Sharon Carrigan, Barbara Siebenmann, Jean Slonaker, Darla Treat Courtney, Heidi Ware and Marge Zimmerman. Six members of the group, Bailey, Bremilst, Carrigan, Siebenmann, Slonaker and Ware accepted both awards from Kimberly Zeman, chair of the NSDAR American Heritage Committee, during NSDAR’s 133rd Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.
