Washington County nonprofit delivers wholesome summer fun for youth

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Girls Inc. of Washington County is opening its doors to young women with fun summer learning experiences they might otherwise not have had.

For 75 years the nonprofit has followed the motto: Strong. Smart. Bold.

Girls Inc. is part of a national nonprofit organization. It provides STEM education – science, technology, engineering and math which is a big part of the experience for the girls. But there’s more to it.

“They are able to have a lot of social and emotional support in their learning,” Rae Tucker with Girls Inc., said. “We have other educational programs; the girls learn about bones in the body and future careers they can have, literacy.”

There are summer camping adventures too.

“We had a team of girls that went canoeing yesterday,” Elizabeth Holtz with Girls Inc., said. “I don’t necessarily think that is something they would try on their own but they had a great time and it was a really fun team-building experience, a great way to be out in nature, having a good time doing something new and different.”

Holtz and Tucker both said the girls’ time on the water was an experience they might not otherwise have had.

“Anything the girls are inspired by or are interested in, we try to make sure we are offering them support in those areas,” says Tucker.

Girls, Inc. is looking forward to its annual Muddy Mammas Mud Run on Sept. 21.
