TEXAS, USA — A federal judge last week granted a temporary injunction, blocking expanded Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ students from taking effect in August in Texas. The changes to Title IX, announced by the U.S. Department of Education in April, clarify that it also protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Title IX is a law introduced in 1972 that bans discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. The expanded protections were set to take effect Aug. 1.

HAMEL, Minn. (KLTV) - Carthage native Tilden Hooper had a good weekend, including a first place finish in Minnesota, to take home over $15,000. Hooper started off with the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colorado. He finished in second place on a horse named Apple Pie with a score of 81 to win $3,755. At the Hamel Rodeo & Bull Ridin’ Bonanza in Hamel, Minnesota, Hooper brought home the top prize on a horse named All Pink with a score of 89 to earn himself $5,217. Hooper continued the good run at Cattlemen’s Days Inc. in Gunnison, Colorado. He scored an 85 to finish second and win $2,452. Finally, at the Silver State Stampede in Elko, Nevada, Hooper scored an 88 for another second place finish and $3,648. Over the four rodeos, Hooper earned $15,072.
One dead after shootout at family gathering near elementary school in Shreveport
One person is dead after a shooting at a family gathering in central Shreveport near the campus of the now-closed Werner Park Elementary School. Police responded to reports of shots fired in the vicinity of Westover Road and Velva Street, and learned that a family gathering had been taking place near the intersection before the shooting. One victim was transported to the hospital in a private vehicle, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
