Hamlet man sentenced to 125 years in child sex abuse case

ROCKINGHAM — A Hamlet man has been sentenced to more than 100 years after being convicted on multiple sex offenses.

Kurtis Scott Madsen, 31, was convicted June 24 on four counts of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult, and one count each of statutory rape of a child and assault on a child under 12.

According to the District Attorney’s office, Madsen “repeatedly sexually assaulted two minor siblings over a period of time.” The victims were 5 and 7 years old at the time of the assaults.

Madsen was arrested and charged in November of 2019.

The case was investigated by Detective Rodney Tucker with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Amber Hardy.

Superior Court Judge Stephan Futrell sentenced Madsen to a minimum of 125 years in prison.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Madsen was booked into Central Prison in Raleigh on June 28, however his recent convictions are not yet listed.

“I want to thank the members of the jury for giving the minor victims in these cases a measure of justice, and the Court for imposing a sentence that will ensure that this defendant will never harm another child,” District Attorney Reece Saunders said in a press release issued July 1.

Another defendant was initially charged in the case, but records appear to show the charge was dropped.

Madsen was previously convicted when he was a teenager in Benton County, Minnesota, of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in 2008, according to the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation’s Sex Offender Registry.

Records show the incident happened the prior year. At the time, Madsen was 14 years old and the victim was 7. He registered in North Carolina on March 1, 2012.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Madsen was previously convicted in Scotland County of misdemeanor larceny in 2013, and possessing stolen goods in 2015.
