Post 49 schedule updated, playoff series could end without another game

BEAUFORT — Wet weather along the eastern shore of the state postponed Hamlet’s playoff series Thursday.

The Post 49 baseball team was supposed to go for its second round playoff series win, but field conditions delayed that opportunity.

Holding a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five game series in the Area 2 Conference playoffs against Beaufort Post 99, Hamlet will try to make a go of it Friday.

Head coach Chip Gordon said game four is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start at East Carteret High School.

With more rain in the forecast, the series has the potential to conclude without playing another game.

Gordon said, “if it rains out, (Beaufort) will concede the series to us.”

The American Legion postseason is on a state-sanctioned schedule, with the second round scheduled to be concluded Friday.

If Hamlet were to win game four, or have the series conceded, Post 49 would earn an automatic bid to the state tournament for the first time since returning to action in 2021.

Should that happen, Hamlet would play a single Area 2 Conference playoff championship game against Wilmington Post 10, which swept Hope Mill Post 32 in its second round series.

The showdown with Wilmington would be played Monday at Hamlet, which would also be a seeding game for the state playoffs.

The Richmond Observer will update Hamlet’s schedule should anything else change.
