HAMLET — A Scotland County man died from a weekend wreck after reportedly leading troopers on a brief chase.

According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, 26-year-old Stephon Ramon La-vonn Bennett of Laurel Hill, was pulled over just before 2 a.m. on suspicion of driving while impaired.

The trooper subjected Bennett to a field sobriety test and was about to initiate an arrest when Bennett ran back to his vehicle and fled the scene, according to the NCSHP.

During the short pursuit, Bennett reportedly lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road to the right and struck the retaining wall in front of Crawford Law Office and the vehicle caught fire.

Bennett did not survive the wreck, troopers say.
