PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Hampden-Sydney College will turn a field at the campus entrance into a habitat for honey bees as part of its new apiary project .

According to a college spokesperson, the project aims to support environmental stewardship and will be giving hands-on educational opportunities for students, faculty and staff.

The project was funded by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges with two grants totaling $24,000.

The apiary houses European honey bees from Charlotte County, Virginia, according to the college.

Local beekeepers who work with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services donated their equipment and expertise to the project. The first hive was installed in March and the second was added in April.
