Strong thunderstorms forecast for mid-week
After an amazing weekend and a great start to the next work week, a more summerlike pattern is poised to take shape across our area. A couple of low pressure systems will be passing through or near to the area during the middle of the week and with warm, moist air settling in it is possible to see some isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Tracking another beautiful day for Monday
Sunday has been beautiful with sunny skies and mild temperatures in the low to mid-70s. It has been breezy, however, with winds gusting as high as 40 mph, with a few isolated reports of wind gusts up to 50 mph. Winds will subside through the evening and after sunset with another crystal clear night ahead. We can expect another beautiful and mild day on Monday before a pattern typical of summer sets in. We'll be looking at highs in the low 80s by the middle of the week with chances for some isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We are tracking the potential for some stronger storms on Wednesday and Thursday so we'll be keeping an eye on that. The warmth will continue through the end of the week and into next weekend.
DOT Seeks Public Input on Highway 18 Improvements in North Central Iowa
The Iowa DOT is seeking public input on proposed improvements to U.S. Highway 18 in north central IOwa. Pete Hjelmstad with the DOT’s Mason City District office says the area targeted for the upgrades is U.S. 18 from the east city limits of Algona to Kossuth County Road P-60 near Sexton. Improvements include recycling the existing pavement and asphalt resurfacing, plus grading and paving of passing lanes, turn lanes, and paved shoulders.

Eldora-New Providence School Board Approves Substitute Teacher Pay for 2024-25 School Year
Monday, the Eldora-New Providence School Board approved to enter the design drawing and bid preparation phase for the E-NP Elementary renovation and addition project. In other business, the Eldora-New Providence School Board approved the daily substitute pay rate of $150 per day for the 2024-25 school year. The E-NP School Board also received an update on the hiring process ahead of the next school year. The board learned the district is still in need of bus drivers but is otherwise fully staffed.

Falcon Baseball wins close battle with Belle Plaine Tuesday, Softball hosts Denver Wednesday
The Aplington-Parkersburg baseball team used a steady offensive output and clamped down defensively for an 8-5 home win over Belle Plaine Tuesday. The Falcons scored at least once in five of their six innings at the plate. After Belle Plaine scored two in the top of the first, the Falcons matched that in the bottom of the first and added another in the second for a 3-2 lead. The Plainsmen took a brief 4-3 lead in the top of the third, but the Falcons put together a response with one in the third and two more in the fourth. From that point, AP held Belle Plaine scoreless while adding two insurance runs in the sixth. Cooper Hoff had two hits and drove in two runs. Preston Janssen had two hits, including a triple and an RBI. Hoff pitched in relief and was credited with the win, and Janssen got the save. Tate Neymeyer scored three runs. AP (9-4, 5-3 NICL-C) will be at Waterloo Columbus Thursday.
