The Iowa Cubs beat the Saints 8-1 on Friday in Des Moines, putting the game away for good with a six-run eighth inning. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. sent a solo homer over the center field wall in the seventh, giving the Saints their first hit and lone run. He added a single in the ninth for St. Paul’s only two hits of the game. The Saints did reach base four times via walk from Iowa starter Riley Thompson, who retired 12 in a row starting in the third.
There’s an ‘urgent need’ for more people to adopt and foster dogs and cats as ARL faces ‘severe space challenges’
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is “facing severe space challenges” as it cares for an exceptionally large number of dogs and cats, the nonprofit animal care organization said in a news release on Thursday. The ARL, which has provided all of the City of Des Moines’ shelter services since 2005, is currently caring for “over 280 dogs and 800 cats daily, with dozens more arriving each day including over 100 new kittens each week.”

High Rainfall Amounts Could Impact Pheasant Population
(Lewis) The abundant rainfall this spring will likely hurt the pheasant population this fall. John Lorenzen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources stated that the weather impact won’t be known until the roadside count is conducted in August to estimate the pheasant numbers for the upcoming fall hunting season. Lorenzen mentioned that pheasant numbers in Iowa tend to decrease after snowy winters, followed by cold, wet springs.
