HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The Salvation Army Virginia Peninsula is partnering with the Zion Baptist Church to help peninsula children as they prepare to head back to school.

Since 2023, this partnership has focused on easing the burden for families that may need financial assistance during the back-to-school season.

According to organizers, they have distributed more than 1500 stuffed backpacks to peninsula families.

“We are honored to stand together in support of families who shouldn’t have to choose between buying back-to-school supplies and paying essential bills like food and rent,” said Captain Antiono Willis, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army Virginia Peninsula. “We’re grateful for a continued partnership with Zion Baptist and their shared dedication to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable families and students in need.

Each backpack will be stocked with school supplies tailored to the specific grade levels of the recipients.

The backpack distribution will take place on Aug. 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Boo Williams Sportsplex, Armistead Pointe Parkway B in Hampton.
