Area veterans and supporters gathered on a rainy Memorial Day in Hamptonville to recognize the ultimate sacrifices of those who have fought for freedom.

The ceremony began with a prayer and pledge of allegiance led by a group of local Scouts.

Veterans Council Chairman James Cline welcomed attendees to Monday’s ceremony. He noted that of the 1.2 million Americans killed in service to the nation, more than 400 of those were from Yadkin County.

“Every American service member we remember here today fought and died with the same principles of Americanism as and you and I — the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” he said.

“They encompass the embodiment of defending our freedoms and their devotion above and beyond most,” he said.

“Every generation since the founding of this great nation has answered the call to serve, whether nationally or abroad,” said Cline. “As we commemorate and remember those who have departed, we also look on the horizon and dream of a world full of peace. Bear in mind, nobody prays for peace more than the troop in the trench.”

Also speaking during Monday’s ceremony were Eddie Vogler and Steve Mosteller. The ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps.
