Gibbes Museum of Art Announces 1858 Prize Celebratory Exhibition
The Gibbes Museum of Art will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art with a major exhibition highlighting artwork and success stories of the diverse group of American artists recognized by the annual prize. Originally established as the Factor Prize for Southern Art, the annual award, underwritten by the Gibbes young patrons’ auxiliary group, Society 1858, since 2013, was developed to recognize the outstanding contributions of contemporary artists in the South.

DATE: Saturday, August 3, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Celebrated Charleston poet Linda Joy Walder will read from Running Naked in the Snow (Free Verse Press), her debut collection of poems exploring life, love, loss, and hope. Linda’s works include Haiku, rhythm word experiments, and lyrical pieces that the poet describes as “word paintings,” pulling back the curtain during grief, engaging with abandoned flowers, or reflecting on intimate family moments, as well as other experiential encounters. There will be a Q&A with the poet following the reading.
North Charleston police seize 26 illegal guns in June, resulting in 26 arrests
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The North Charleston Police Department released the number illegal guns they confiscated last month. In the month of June, officers confiscated 26 unlawfully possessed or illegally carried guns, the department said. Additionally, these confiscations resulted in 26 arrests, police said.

MUSC Hollings Cancer Center introduces next-day access for abdominal cancer patients
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The MUSC Hollings Cancer Center launches a next-day appointment access program for patients diagnosed with abdominal cancer. The new program is built for patients diagnosed with stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas or hepato-pancreato-biliary cancers. They can also assess and address rare benign or malignant tumors like GIST, neuroendocrine tumors, pancreatic cystic neoplasm (IPMN) and choledochal cysts.
