In a gut-wrenching turn, the attacker, aged 22 from Hancock City, later rang the police to report the assault before taking his own life. The gruesome event unfolded around 5:45 p.m. last Sunday in Hancock, according to the local law enforcement.
It's been reported that the octogenarian was fixing up a political sign in his yard when the ATV rider tore through the turf and hit him square on.
The senior was hastily taken to hospital, his condition being described as dire. Police believe the ATV driver had also hit two other cars earlier that same day.
Authorities said: "The suspect appeared to target supporters of Trump and Law Enforcement."
The day after, the Hancock Police Department received a message from an individual in Quincy Township, near Hancock in Houghton County. The person asked to "confess to a crime involving an ATV driver within the past 24 hours," according to a release from the Houghton County Sheriff's Office.
This shocking crime occurred just about a week before former president Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by Thomas Crooks, 20, at a rally in Pennsylvania .
"The crimes reported in the city of Hancock appeared to be politically motivated, involving victims who displayed Trump election signs as well as law enforcement appreciated stickers and flags commonly referred to as 'thin blue line' paraphernalia," the Houghton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
A spokesman for Vice President and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' campaign sent out a statement, condemning the political violence, according to the New York Times.
Local law enforcement joined in, citing the callousness of the grisly crime.
"What this has done to this community is pretty upsetting," remarked Hancock Police Chief Tami Sleeman in a chat with the Detroit News. "Our concern is the safety of everybody here. Politics should not bring violence."
In a separate incident in Florida , authorities gave 68 year old Micheal Wiseman a ticking off for online threats of violence he made towards Trump and his running mate J. D Vance last Friday.
