HANDLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Authorities with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office have released additional details with regard to a head-on collision which occurred Monday and claimed the life of one motorist.

The two-vehicle accident left one driver dead and left Maccorkle Avenue SE (WV Route 61) between the Montgomery and Handley areas shut down into the late evening hours on Monday.

Investigators with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office indicate that, prior to the accident, a white Hyundai sedan had been traveling eastbound toward Montgomery. The vehicle reportedly traveled left of the center line, struck a guardrail, and returned to the eastbound lane before crossing over the center line, initiating a head-on collision with a red Dodge SUV.

The driver of the Hyundai has been identified as 59-year-old David McCallister of Belle, West Virginia. McCallister was declared deceased at the scene of the accident while the driver of the red SUV was transported to Montgomery General Hospital to receive treatment for injuries which are said to have been non-life threatening.

The root cause of the incident has not yet been determined as investigators continue to look into the incident. Authorities have reported that a possible medical episode is suspected to have contributed to the accident.
