HANFORD, Calif ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A crash near Hanford left one man dead early Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

According to officers, a 25-year-old man was driving south on 6th Avenue around 5 a.m. He stopped his Chevrolet Silverado at the stop sign before attempting to cross Highway 198. As he made his way through the intersection he struck a silver Honda Accord traveling east.

Officers say the force of the impact caused the Honda to overturn. The car flipped multiple times before coming to a stop in a dirt lot on the other side of the highway. The 21-year-old driver of the Honda was pronounced dead on scene.

According to officials, the impact of the crash also caused the pickup to flip. As the pickup overturned it entered an irrigation canal where it came to a stop partially submerged on its passenger right side. The driver of the Chevrolet sustained minor injuries and was transported to Kaweah Health Medical Center for treatment.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the driver of the Honda.

Officers say neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the crash. This is an ongoing investigation.
