No one was injured after a fire at a butcher shop in Adams County Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the scene of a commercial fire at Weaver's Custom Butcher Shop on the 1400 block of Centennial Road in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, around 4:06 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, according to Adams County 911 records.

According to Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Services Assistant Chief Tom Lawrence, no one was injured in the fire, which took place while the business was open.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from the side of the building, and quickly went to work extinguishing the flames.

Roughly 75% of the building suffered moderate fire and smoke damage, Lawrence said, though he wasn't sure of the full extent of impact on the business.

"They're not going to be able to operate there for a while," said Lawrence. "There was pretty significant damage."

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, Lawrence said.

According to the website for the business, Weaver's Butcher Shop has been a family-owned business at the location since 1949, offering butchering services along with a shop on the premises.

Much of the visible damage on the outside of the building was seen on the left side, near what Lawrence described as the smoke house for the butcher shop.

Firefighters were seen cutting a hole in the roof to ventilate smoke out of the structure as they worked to combat the fire.

Lawrence thanked the responding departments for their assistance on the fire.

Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Services was assisted by United Hook & Ladder, Irishtown Fire Company, Gettysburg Fire Department, Northeast Adams Fire & EMS, Life Team EMS, Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Alpha Fire Company of Littlestown, and Barlow Volunteer Fire Company.

Check back later as this is a developing story.
