An adult and a child were transported to the hospital after a crash in Heidelberg Township Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the scene in the 6900 block of Cannery Road in Heidelberg Township, just barely across the Penn Township line, around 3:28 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024, according to York County 911 dispatch records.

When they arrived, they found a single-vehicle crash involving a Subaru, which had gone off Cannery Road and flipped roughly 50 yards down railroad tracks, said Porters Volunteer Fire Company fire chief Chris Walker.

All occupants were out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived, said Walker, but both occupants, an adult and a child, were transported to York Hospital.

"Their injuries did not appear to be life threatening," said Walker.

Despite the significant visible damage to the vehicle, Walker credited the vehicle's frame with helping prevent further injury during the crash.

"The passenger compartment of the car remained virtually intact," Walker noted. "The car did its job."

Walker said it appeared the vehicle had failed to navigate a curve along Cannery Road, left the roadway, and flipped multiple times over railroad tracks along the roadway.

Northern York County Regional Police are investigating the cause of the crash, Walker said.

The railroad tracks were shut down during the incident while an inspection was performed and debris was cleared from the tracks, Walker said.

Crews from CSX came out to the scene to inspect the railroad tracks due to the vehicle rolling across them, Walker said, and no damage was found to the tracks.

Porters Volunteer Fire Company was assisted by Hanover Area Fire & Rescue and Community Life Team EMS on the scene.
