Let's dive into our top story for today...

Vintage 'base ball' tournament transports players, spectators back to the 19th century

As players took to the field on a hot July morning, you might have thought you fell through a wrinkle in time and landed in the 1800s.

Your eyes don't deceive you: This isn't your grandfather's baseball, but it might have been his grandfather's.

That's because on Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21, the National 19th Century Base Ball Festival once again took over the fields of Schroeder Farm in Gettysburg to celebrate the history of America's pastime.

A look back: Fighting a barn fire in 1961

A lot has changed in firefighting since 1961!

Here's a scene from a barn fire, taken from the July 24, 1961 edition of the Evening Sun.

In this photo, you can see a firefighter in a three-quarters coat and roll-up rubber boots, a far cry from the turnout gear of today's departments.

This scene was from a barn fire that occurred during a severe storm and caused $75,000 in damages, according to the article. The fire was on "Old Hanover-Westminster Road," and called the Pennville Fire Company, Littlestown Fire Department and Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Company.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire after a resident drove to the Pennville firehouse on Frederick Street, having been unable to dial the firehouse due to storm damage. A bit of a far cry from today's 911 system.
