It might seem like we are in the heart of summer, but for high school athletes, fall is just weeks away.

Media days are on the horizon. Heat acclimatization for football opens on Aug. 5, and the first official day of practice for fall sports is Aug. 12.

    That's just three weeks away.

With that in mind, we are taking a look at the top 100 rising sophomore, junior and senior athletes we are most looking forward to watching in the 2024-25 school year. They are all-stars, players of the year or have won league, district or state titles.

Three questions in the community: 'Biscuit'!

I had lots of fun covering the vintage 'base ball' tournament this weekend in Gettysburg! Such a fascinating subculture.

Here's a little bonus from my time talking to Klent 'Biscuit" Pope, who traveled all the way up from Knoxville, Tennessee! In vintage baseball, every player has a nickname, and Mr. Pope's nickname is 'Biscuit.'

Q: What makes you guys take such a long drive ?

Biscuit: We wanted to come a couple of years ago, but you know, it's a long way.

So there's two teams in Knoxville. There's the Emmitt Machinists and the Knoxville Holstons, and this year we decided to get one group together to come up here. So we played under the name of the Emmitt Machinists, but there's three or four of us on the Holstons that are up here today.

We wanted to come to Gettysburg, and we wanted to see this area. We've actually not been up here in the Northeast a whole lot. So we wanted to come up here, and in three days we check off a lot of boxes at once.

Q: How long have you been playing 19th century baseball?

Biscuit: Probably nine years now. My son Zye has played for two years. I wanted to play long enough that Zye could play with me, and I've got another son at home. He had to work this weekend. So all three of us are playing now.

Q: What's your favorite part of playing such a unique sport?

Biscuit: Just the camaraderie, nobody really cares what the score is.

We're all a bunch of old guys that get to play a kid's game.

What would be awesome would be if there was a microphone set out behind the pitcher's mound, so that everybody can hear all of the fun talk that goes on. Yeah, that's really the fun part.

Thanks for talking with us, Biscuit!

If any of y'all have feedback, pet photos, or questions, feel free to send them over to my email at hjones@gannett.com ! I will do my best to answer any questions if I can, and I will be happy to highlight any comments y'all might have.

That's it for your Wednesday Daily Briefing! See you Thursday!
